How to Get Cited by
ChatGPT, Perplexity,
and Google AI.

AI citation is when ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or another AI
system references your content as a source in a generated answer. It is the
AI equivalent of ranking on page one: your brand, your URL, or your specific
content appears in front of a user who did not search directly for you. As AI
systems handle a growing proportion of informational queries, citation presence
in those systems is a visibility channel that cannot be ignored. This guide
covers the specific changes that increase citation probability across the major
AI platforms.
Why AI systems cite some sources and not others.
AI systems that retrieve web content operate like a very fast, very large research
assistant. They pull candidate sources for a given query, evaluate which sources
best answer the specific question being asked, and extract the most relevant
passage. The evaluation criteria differ slightly by platform, but share a common
core: domain trust, passage relevance, factual specificity, and structural
extractability. Understanding each criterion is the starting point for improving
citation performance.
Domain trust works similarly to traditional SEO authority.
AI systems weight content from domains with strong backlink profiles, established
publishing history, and consistent topical focus higher than content from new or
thin-authority domains. Building domain trust is a long-term process, but it
compounds with every piece of content and every external link acquired.
Passage relevance is determined at the paragraph level, not the
page level. A page that is generally relevant to a topic may have one or two
passages that directly answer a specific query. AI systems extract those passages
preferentially. The implication is that content structured around specific
question-answer pairs is more citable than content that discusses a topic broadly
without segmenting answers by specific sub-questions.
The eight changes that increase AI citation probability.
01
Write the answer in the first sentence of every section
AI extraction algorithms look for the direct answer to the section's question in the opening of each paragraph. Content that buries the answer after three sentences of context is less extractable than content that states the answer immediately. Rewrite every section header as a question and answer it in the first sentence.
02
Use specific numbers and verifiable facts, not general statements
"Most SEO campaigns take three to six months to show initial results" is citable. "SEO takes time" is not. "Domain ratings above 50 are competitive for most local service queries in the UK" is citable. "Domain authority matters" is not. Specificity is a citation signal across every AI platform.
03
Add explicit expert attribution
Name yourself as the author and state your credentials relevantly. "According to Farman Rind, an SEO consultant with seven years managing 70+ websites" is a citation anchor. AI systems are trained to identify expertise claims and to weight attributed statements over unattributed ones.
04
Implement FAQPage schema
FAQ sections with FAQPage schema provide machine-readable question-answer pairs that map directly to the format AI extraction algorithms use. Every FAQ answer should be complete and standalone. A question that requires reading the full article to understand the answer will not be cited as a standalone FAQ response.
05
Add Speakable schema to your most citable passages
Speakable schema marks specific CSS selectors as preferred candidates for voice and AI extraction. Apply it to your introduction passage and any section that directly answers a high-value query.
06
Get cited on high-authority external platforms
Citations from trusted external sources create a citation chain: authoritative site A references your content, AI system B already cites authoritative site A, so AI system B is more likely to also cite your content as the original source. Target industry publications, research roundups, Wikipedia mentions, and academic or institutional citations.
07
Rank in traditional search first for Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews draw predominantly from pages already ranking in traditional search. If you are not on page one for a query, you are not a realistic candidate for an AI Overview for that query. Traditional SEO is the prerequisite. See how to rank in Google AI Overviews for the specifics.
08
Keep content factually current
AI platforms with real-time retrieval capabilities check for freshness signals. Content with outdated statistics, superseded recommendations, or historical framing ("in 2022, Google announced...") is at a disadvantage for queries where current information is expected. Review and update data-heavy content annually at minimum.
How to measure AI citation performance.
AI citation measurement uses three layers. First, dedicated monitoring tools:
Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Overviews all behave differently and require
different monitoring approaches. Platforms like AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI, and LLM Scout
run automated queries and track brand and URL appearances in AI-generated answers.
They provide citation frequency trends over time, competitive citation comparison,
and sentiment data for how your brand is described in AI responses.
Second, Google Search Console AI Overviews data: filter the Performance report by
Search Type to isolate impressions and clicks driven by AI Overview appearances.
This gives you query-level data for your Google AI Overview performance without
requiring a separate tool. Third, manual query testing: run your target queries
in each AI platform and check whether your URLs appear in the cited sources.
Manual testing is imprecise due to AI answer variability, but it provides
qualitative confirmation for priority queries. For the full GEO and AEO
optimization approach, see GEO consulting services

FAQ
Getting cited by AI questions.
AI systems that retrieve web content for answers evaluate several factors when selecting sources to cite. Domain authority and trust signals influence which sources are considered reliable. Content relevance at the passage level determines whether the specific text directly answers the query. Structural clarity affects whether the system can extract a usable answer fragment. Factual specificity makes content more citable because AI systems prefer concrete, verifiable claims over vague general statements. For Perplexity specifically, the retrieval is heavily influenced by real-time search engine rankings for the query, meaning content that ranks well in traditional search has higher citation probability. ChatGPT Browse mode weights high-authority domains more heavily than Perplexity, making domain trust a stronger factor for ChatGPT citations. Both platforms favor content with explicit expert attribution over anonymous or unattributed content.
Yes, significantly. Wikipedia is one of the most consistently cited sources across every major AI platform. For brands, individuals, and organizations with genuine notability, having a Wikipedia article (or being mentioned in a Wikipedia article for a relevant topic) substantially increases AI citation probability. Wikipedia's authority signals (verified citations, neutral point of view, editorial oversight) align closely with what AI systems look for when selecting citable sources. If you are citation-eligible for Wikipedia, pursuing that is one of the highest-leverage AI visibility actions available. If you are not yet notable enough for a standalone Wikipedia article, being cited as a source or mentioned in existing relevant Wikipedia articles is an intermediate step that provides partial citation authority signals.
For real-time retrieval systems like Perplexity and ChatGPT Browse, content that is indexed by Google can begin appearing in AI citations within weeks of publication, assuming it ranks reasonably well in traditional search for the relevant queries. For Google AI Overviews, the dependency on traditional ranking position means the timeline follows your SEO progress, typically 60 to 90 days for initial ranking data. For citation in ChatGPT's training data (which influences factual claims about entities in the model's knowledge), the timeline is much longer and depends on when the next training data update incorporates your content. The fastest path to AI citation is optimizing for real-time retrieval systems (Perplexity, ChatGPT Browse) where ranking and content quality drive near-term results, while building toward inclusion in training data through sustained authority building.
There is no direct submission pathway for citation in most AI platforms. Perplexity has a publisher program that provides some visibility controls but not guaranteed citation. OpenAI and Anthropic have data licensing arrangements with some publishers, but these are commercial agreements, not available to most businesses. The practical path is indirect: publish high-quality, authoritative content that is indexed in Google, optimize it for the structural signals that AI systems favor, build domain authority through links and external mentions, and ensure your brand and content appear on the high-authority platforms (industry publications, Wikipedia, authoritative directories) that AI systems already cite. You cannot ask to be cited. You can make yourself the best available source for the queries you want to appear in.
Yes. Small businesses can appear in AI citations for niche-specific and location-specific queries where the competition for citations is lower than in broad category queries. A local accountancy firm is unlikely to appear in ChatGPT's answer to "what is a tax deduction," but it can appear in Perplexity's answer to "small business accountant Manchester." The GEO strategy for small businesses focuses on identifying the specific queries where their expertise and local specificity give them a citation advantage over generic national sources, then structuring content to explicitly answer those queries. The geographic and niche specificity that seems like a limitation is actually an asset in AI search, where the answer to a location-specific query needs a location-specific source.
